Friday Fixer

It's been a few weeks since the last Friday Fixer, but it's been such a BUSY time.  It was a HUGE hit back in September, so I'm thrilled to be back with another one.  If you're new to Friday Fixers, this is how they go down - Friday Fixers are an awesome party where we all dance to Katy Perry's song Birthday and throw rainbow confetti in the air.  No, but seriously, this is how it works... you leave your website/blog/social media profile URL in the comments below, I'll check it out to see how awesome you are, and then I'll comment back with my critique.

We're not all perfect!  In fact there are a zillion things I have on my fix list for my own websites.  But sometimes it's really helpful to have someone on the outside to check out your web presence.  And what better critiques and tips than free ones, right!?  Not to mention, I encourage everyone in the comments to check out each other's websites and feel free to give them any tips that you may have!  Mixing, mingling, and getting free tips, baby!  That's what Friday Fixers are all about!

Now, I can't take all the credit for this awesomeness.  I first saw this idea done by the lovely Sarah of xosarah.com... except her's are called Fix-It Fridays!  By the way, she's an amazing website designer so she may be able to give you some incredible design tips - so yeah, I think you should go attend her party, too!

Also, I can't simply give endless amounts of tips for days and days and perhaps weeks and weeks to come on this one single post... so I'll only be giving critiques to those who post their URL by Sunday, November 9th at midnight!  But no worries if you missed out this time - I try and host a Friday Fixer at least once a month!  Can I get a woo woo!?  WOO WOO!

Okay, ready for the fun?  Go comment below with the URL to the website, blog, or social media profile you'd like me to critique!

Let the critiquing begin... :)  xo Ali Bee

  1. I'd love to see someone else's opinion on my website. Especially since I'm working on re-branding the website as I start my blog as well so I'm always looking for tips and ideas. :)

    1. Yay! First commenter :) First off, loving the logo! Adore the font. One thing I struggled finding on your website was a photo of YOU. First thing I want to go to when I land on a website is the about page and I expect to see a photo of the person behind the brand/business. I think you have amazing work and a lot to offer, but show off your pretty face, girl! People want to see you - it helps them put a brand/name to a face and that can go a looonnng way! xo

    2. I love the simplicity and clean look to your site!
      I agree wiht Ali's suggestion.
Also, your design work is beautiful!
My suggestion would be your link color to be a bit darker shade of the blue because it will help show your social media connection links as well as the navigation :)

    1. You're a new blogger!? You're doing a fantastic job! Picture of you on the side bar - check. Little blurb on what you and the blog is about - check. Lots of pretty photos to look at - check. Pinnable images - check. Post recommendations after each post - bonus points! I think you're doing awesome, but one thing I noticed was every time I click on a new page, a new tab opened... it's just something that can get a bit overwhelming and annoying to some people. Keep up the great work! xo

    2. Your blog has a good flow, and it is so organized! It makes me want to continue scrolling which is great!
I saw your post about November- I am a graduating senior as well and that is what I write about on my blog :)
A suggestion I have would be maybe your tabs home lifestyle etc, could be on a second row? I confused home for homepage, but realized it wasnt that haha.

    3. Ahhh, good point, Mariah! I missed that... that could be a little confusing. I used to have a "home" tab on my blog and I think I ended up naming it like "home decor" or just "decor" ...it can be tricky naming those tabs!

    4. Thanks so much for the advice!! I always thought it's better to open in a new tab since people don't lose the page their on if they want to go back when browsing, but it's great to hear your input! Maybe I won't do it for every single page. And for the home tab-- changing now! Definitely see why that can be confusing.
      Thanks again guys!!

    5. Jenny, that is true in some cases! But for a blog I don't think it'd be a huge issue. It could just be a personal preference though, too! I would definitely do it for less pages... I think that would help a lot :) Glad to hear you changed the home page - you go, girl! xo

  3. UGH - I know that my blog has MAJOR potential but I know I need help. CRITIQUE ME, BABY! What I'm most interested in is how to clean up the look of everything - the aesthetics. I love using Blogger, the part about it being FREE leaves me feeling like I CAN'T complain, but I want it to look better - my widgets, Other Pages, photo on my sidebar...sigh... Help me, Ali. Bring it, girl! http://www.thatbusygirllife.com/

    1. Girl, I lalalove your enthusiasm! You're going to do big things with that wonderful attitude of yours :) I suffer from the same problems (I also use blogger). I'm hoping to switch by Spring time though! If you're interested in eventually switching, I'd recommend checking out ProPhoto - it costs money, but I hear it's soooo worth it. For now if you want to stay in the free zone, then blogger is totally fine! I mean hey, I'm using it and have been for years... I'm doing ok! I think you're biggest issue on your blog is your side bar and post section area are all a little off. You need to get the things in your side bar all the same width and keep everything (photos + text) in the blog post area the same width as well. To find out the pixel width of each, go to template, customize, adjust widths - there you'll find all the dimensions and what not :) I hope this helps, girly! xo

    2. Along with Ali's comments and suggestions, I feel you need the other stuff to read that is currently on your side bar, to be on the top of your page! I wanna know what other awesome food posts I can look at haha!

  4. I'm working on a rebrand so I would love to hear about how I can work on my personal design skills! I'm still learning the ins and outs of trying to design and would love to hear your opinion on my current blog design! http://www.sabragilbert.com

    1. Loving the blog :) Lots of good stuff there! My advice for you is similar to Blair's. I noticed some of your photos seem off center a bit. I recommend making all your photos the same width as the text... it just makes your posts look a lot cleaner and it'll be a much smoother read. Hope this makes sense :) Thanks for stopping by! xoxo

    1. Mariah, thanks so much for joining the fun! :D Your blog is very clean and modern - I dig it! I noticed a couple things that bothered me a bit though - 1. I think your post titles should be larger text than they are. They should really POP out at your readers :) 2. Maybe it's just a pet peeve for me, but I really prefer when the post date is before the post, not after. Keep in mind, this could just be my personal preference, but it just feels more professional to me. Keep up the great work on the blog!

As for your website... again, modern, love it. Back in the day, I had a similar design when I was strictly a photographer! The biggest issue I had myself back then was people landing on my website and not knowing what type of photographer I was. At the time, I did a mix of things, but I still had a distinct style and brand. My suggestion would be to be extremely picky and conscious of the images you choose to display on the home page. I would pick images that all flow well together and are similar ... Another option would be to have a landing page and make all the types of photography you do separate. That's what I ended up doing - I had my fine art photography on one separate website which was a lot of fine art portraiture and then my lifestyle portraiture on a separate website, as well... my main URL led to a landing page where people could decide which they wanted to go to. I hope this makes sense and you find it helpful :) You're doing great! xo
